Open Storage is an event organized as part of the exhibition Figures of Memory in the House of Flowers, marking the 35th anniversary of the death of Josip Broz Tito and the 70th anniversary of the first baton relay race. The event (held on every Saturday, from 10 am to 2 pm) offers visitors an opportunity to gain a deeper insight into the collection of Youth Batons consisting of more than 20,000 items, which is today kept at the museum.
Talking to a curator, visitors will have a chance to discover numerous details about Youth Relay Races, Youth Batons, mass games and celebrations marking May 25, as well as about the ways in which not only these events, but also Youth Batons themselves changed over the years. The viewers will also be in a position to hear interesting stories about Youth Batons, their diversity and large number, take a closer look at them, pick them up and examine them in detail.
The people who carried Youth Batons will be able to remember what that felt like and all those who did not have an opportunity to hold a Youth Baton in their hands will get a chance to do so in the House of Flowers.
ABOUT THE EXHIBITION FIGURES OF MEMORY
The exhibition Figures of Memory was conceived with the aim of showing the mechanisms of collective memory and offering an innovative way of interpreting museum collections, archive material and documentary video material and linking them to the present moment. The exhibition spans the period before and after Tito’s death, from 1945 to 2014 and includes a segment about his funeral.
A segment of the exhibition focuses on the batons, sent to Josip Broz to mark May 25 that keep arriving at the museum to this day. The display showcases around 200 batons, coming from a variety of givers – Pioneers, young people, members of different leagues and associations, peasants, people living in various towns and villages, workers employed at different companies, veterans and military servicemen.
